- Maria grew up and bought the Wild Pony where she tends bar and serves as manager.
- She had a hook up with Michael Guerin that eventually developed into a relationship, despite the fact that he's her best friend Alex's ex.
- Found out about the aliens through Rosa trying to steal booze from the Wild Pony. Maria freaked out and then demanded distance from both Michael and Liz since she was angry over being lied to. Eventually she forgives them.
- Her mother Mimi appeared to suffer from some kind of undiagnosable dementia, but it was revealed in season 2 that both Mimi and Maria are direct descendants of an alien hybrid. Both mother and daughter posses mild psychic abilities and it is hinted that Mimi's "losing time" might actually be her losing herself in time.
Personality: While there's certainly nothing wrong with being independent in principle, Maria takes it as a challenge to be strong and resilient even when she does not need to be. She does not talk about her problems until she is breaking down or near to it, and she does not trust easily. She has been hurt before and repeatedly, so it takes time and consistency to break down her walls. At the first sign of the potential for a wounded heart, she enforces boundaries and distance, sometimes to the detriment of her and her relationships. She guards her heart a little too fiercely and as a consequence might miss out on something that could be good for her.
She does not forgive easily (though she does, eventually, forgive, if warranted), but she especially does not forget. She says herself she keeps a mercenary, that she keeps tabs, and that doesn't just mean monetary ones at the bar. There's no water under the bridge with her; she holds grudges and she means them. She continues to hate Isobel, purely because Rosa hated her, for ten years without giving the woman a second chance until that was earned and fully deserved. She holds a lot of dislike for the locals as well, even though she serves them at the bar. She would rather make money off of them than turn them away, but rest assured she is getting something back for the grief that they gave her in the past.
She does not hesitate to fight back, either, though rarely with violence. When the owner of the Wild Pony fired her mother from her job, Maria took it upon herself to buy the bar and make it her own. If anyone speaks badly of her friends, she lashes out with snarky remarks and dirty looks. She doesn't restrain herself when it comes to her annoyance and anger, but lets it flow freely towards those she feels deserve it.
Maria can also be sharp and judgemental at times. She is a no nonsense kind of person, determined and focused. Which means that when she wants something done, it needs to be done now. She holds her own in a disagreement and sticks to her guns stubbornly, refusing to budge. Too many people have tried to walk over her, her family, her friends, for her to allow it to ever happen again.
A lifetime of derision has earned her a temper, too. She grew up in a town that was too small for her, too narrow-minded, and as a result she's been nursing some anger for a long time. She's not particularly quick on the trigger, but when her fire is stoked, she comes hard for you. She is fierce in her defense of others and herself.
Lastly, she has a tendency towards not wanting to get involved when she perhaps should. She knows, for example, that Isobel's husband is preying on a woman that attends the Wild Pony's charity dinners. She convinces the girl not to leave with him, but she doesn't say anything about it later until pressed. She lets her mother keep her secret of who she's talking to over the Internet when her mother is, for all appearances, unstable and needs looking after. The judgement calls that she makes are not always good in the long run. Powers and Abilities: Maria is clairvoyant and has visions of present and future events. She's psychic enough to know what cards someone is holding and she does a fair job of palm reading when she wants to. Her gut instinct is almost always right. The degree to which she uses this ability, if at all, will be determined by an opt-in/opt-out post.
